PISTON RINGS & STUFFING BOX EQUIPMENT

  PISTON RINGS

Lockwood & Carlisle was founded in 1876 and remains one of the famous names in piston rings.

Lockwood & Carlisle specialises in the specification and distribution of piston,
compressor and stuffing box rings to OEMs and diesel engine users. Large stocks of all types of piston rings and stuffing box equipment are held at Sheffield to provide an immediate response to customer demand.

Piston rings and stuffing box equipment for two and four-stroke diesel engines, compressors and other applications :

  • OEM Supplier
  • Large Stocks
  • Worldwide Distribution

The main functions of diesel engine piston rings are to maintain gas tight operation and help to provide effective lubrication control and heat transfer in the combustion chamber. Piston rings must also complement the characteristics of other engine components such as the piston and liner and the operating parameters of combustion, cooling and lubrication.

  MATERIALS AND ENGINEERING

Materials for L&C rings are specified to provide the appropriate elasticity and wear resistance characteristics. Their chemical composition, the casting process and their subsequent treatment create the relevant distribution of graphite and/or carbides in various grades of martensitic, bairitic or pearlitic molecular structures most suited to particular applications.

L&C piston rings for large two-stroke diesel engines are machined on cam turning machines to produce positive or negative ovality as relevant. When such rings are operating in working conditions the correct seal is formed and the rings benefit from improved thermal stability with minimum tension loss.

  PROFILES AND JOINTS
L&C supplies the full spectrum of ring profiles and joints to provide the necessary gas tightness (compression). Oil dispersion and control, anti-stick or breaking resistance. Expanders contained within certain rings are produced to give increased wall pressure for many engines.
  SURFACE TREATMENTS AND INSERTS
L&C provides chromium plated, spray coated (metal & plasma) and many other surface treated rings for various engines to enhance wear resistance. In other cases bronze or solid lubricants are embedded in working faces or rings are copper plated to assist bedding in and to provide an immediate seal.
  RING SET COMBINATIONS

L&C holds large stocks of complete ring packs for a wide range of engine types. Ring packs are supplied an accordance with OEM specifications.

EQUIPMENT FOR PISTON ROD AND COOLING PIPE STUFFING BOXES

The main functions of stuffing boxes are to seal scavenging air from the crankcase whilst ensuring that the piston rod is lubricated in a controlled manner.

L&C supplies a complete range of high quality scraper, sealing and tightening rings and sub-components for piston rod and cooling pipe stuffing boxes.

  L&C stocks include:

For European and Japanese built MAN - B&W engines
